Claiming child benefit 2016/2017

eligibility | claiming child benefit | child benefit payment

Eligibility

Even if you are not the child’s parent you can still claim Child Benefit if:

• you reside in the UK and you’re responsible for a child under 16

• the child usually lives with you

• the child keeps their toys, clothes, etc at your home

• you pay for their meals and give them pocket money

You will normally stop receiving Child Benefit payments when your child reaches 16 unless they are in education.

practical-info.png You will not get Child Benefit if you or your partner have an individual income of more than £50,000.

How to claim child benefit?

You should claim child benefit as soon as the child is born or starts living with you.

warning-32.png Child benefit can only be backdated for up to 3 months.

You must fill in a "Child Benefit claim form" that you can download online from HM Revenue & Customs or from the “Bounty Pack” that is given to new mothers in hospital.

You need to fill in the form, enclose your child’s original birth or adoption certificate (which will be returned to you) and post it to:

Child Benefit Office (GB)

Washington

Newcastle upon Tyne

NE88 1ZD

Telephone: (0044)(0)300 200 3100

Child benefit payment

In the UK and Scotland, child benefit is a tax-free payment paid every 4 weeks directly to the parents or carer’s bank account.

You get £20.70 a week for your eldest or only child and £13.70 a week for each of your other children.
