Before you can get on a coach, first, let's see where they are. The bus station is located in St Andrew's Square, in the east of the city centre and is only 5 minutes’ walk away from Waverley train station and from the Airlink 100 bus, the Airport Express Shuttle.

The bus station is the terminal for short and long distance journeys between the capital and the rest of the country (London, Manchester, Inverness, Glasgow, Aberdeen, etc.)

Journey planner, routes & timetables

gold-star.png Citylink has produced an excellent journey planner to select your destination, fare and consult the timetables.

Journey planner & routes

Simply start keying the first letters of you departure location and you will get the list of all the stops for this location. Repeat this with the destination and again you will see all the available stops.

Citylink travels to dozens of locations throughout the UK so it would not be practical to enumerate here every single one of them. Instead, we'll mention Edinburgh to Glasgow, Edinburgh to Aberdeen and Edinburgh to Inverness routes.

practical-info.png Practical info!

Citylink does not travel to London from Edinburgh.

Edinburgh to Glasgow route

Coaches leave from Edinburgh bus station 7/7 and arrive in Glasgow city centre at Buchanan Bus Station which is a few minutes’ walk away from Queen Street train station (one of the two Glasgow main train station).

The earliest coaches leave around 05.15 weekday and 06.30 at the weekend although the latter can be earlier depending on when we are in the season. The latest coaches leave Edinburgh just before midnight.

The short journey takes between 1hr 10min and 1hr 30min and this is a direct service.

gold-star.png Fares can be as cheap as £1 for a single ticket and £4 for a return ticket, depending on your travel date and time. Obviously the earlier you book the better the fare.

Edinburgh to Aberdeen route

Again, coaches leave Edinburgh bus station 7/7 and arrive in Aberdeen at the bus station in Union Square which is in the city centre and close to the train station.

Coaches leave every hour throughout most of the day, between around 07.30 and 23.00 during the week and 08.20 and 23.00 at the weekend.

The journey takes between 3hrs 10min and 3hrs 50min but unfortunately, none of the services are direct. 2 coaches may leave at the same time from Edinburgh but have different stops.

Fares can be as low as £4 for a single ticket (Super Single) and £8 for a return ticket (Apex Return), depending on your travel date and time.

Edinburgh to Inverness route

Coaches leave Edinburgh bus station 7/7 and arrive at Inverness bus station which is close to the train station in the city centre.

There are between 1 and 2 coaches running every hour throughout most of the day starting at around 08.30 with the last one around 20.45.

The journey is pretty good and takes between 3hrs 35min and 4hrs 50min but be aware that not all services are direct.

Considering the distance (124 miles/200 kms) fares are very good and can be as cheap as £4 for a single ticket (Super Single) and £24.40 for a return ticket (Apex Return), depending on your travel date and time.

Timetables

Current timetables are available on the Citylink website and can be downloaded as PDF documents.

How do I buy (very) cheap bus tickets?

You can book your tickets on the megabus website, it's easy.  Simply select how many people are travelling, where from and to, the date, and click Search. If anything, you'll find it difficult not to find any cheap tickets!

You can also book over the phone by calling 0900 160 0900 (Service operated by Journeycall Ltd. Calls cost 61p per minute from a BT landline, calls from mobiles and some other networks may be higher).

With a very impressive 72 single trips a day (Mon-Fri) between Edinburgh and Glasgow, you will find it very difficult to find a better value for money. A megabus cheap ticket means that fares can be as low as £3.50 for a single ticket and £7.50 for a return ticket, depending on your travel date.

Other fares to travel to almost 100 locations throughout the UK are equally impressive.

warning-32.png  A return ticket between Edinburgh and London (Victoria Coach Station) can be as cheap as £2 (you'll need to add a 50p booking fee).

Obviously not all tickets between the two cities are that cheap and you will have to be flexible in terms of travel dates and times.

Saying that, in the majority of cases you will find return tickets for under £35. Considering there are 774 kms (481 miles) between the 2 cities, you'll be hard pushed to find cheaper tickets.

Route maps & timetables

Megabus.com travels to almost 100 locations throughout the UK so it would not be practical to list them all here.

The impressive service provided between Edinburgh and Glasgow is perfect for daily commuting. The company also offers a very cheap London coach.

The good thing about megabus website is that it is very easy to use. You simply need to enter the date of travel and the destination to see all the fares available, departure and arrival times and schedule details.
