Blacksmithing Courses
Ratho Byres Forge - Artist blacksmiths
Blacksmithing courses may not be your first thought for a fun and creative weekend, but Ratho Byres Forge in particular provides a fantastic insight into the art. The company is near Edinburgh, just before the airport, and Phil, Pete and the other blacksmiths there run highly successful and extremely popular weekend recreational blacksmithing courses.
There is a very good reason for that; there are only 2 spaces available per course with one master blacksmith teaching. Each student works at their own fire & anvil and tuition is 1 to 2 and very much hands on. Courses are vey popular with men and women alike whatever their age.
What Pete and the other blacksmiths do is pure art at its very, very best and they also happen to be (unsurprisingly) among the elite not only in Scotland but in the UK. In the space of only two days you will create you own art - light fixture, sculpture, tool, agricultural implement, decorative item, cooking utensil, etc - and find that it is equally physically challenging and intellectually stimulating.
I could talk for days about what’s so good and unique about Ratho Byres Forge but let’s just say that you’ll feel immensely proud of what you’ve created, it is good exercise and yes, it is different.
One last thing, Phil is an eminent master blacksmith and Pete a master blacksmith, not something you achieve overnight.
...master blacksmith…how cool is that?
