Taxes: Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) 2014/2015

SDLT is a tax on land and property transactions.

When you buy a property which is worth over £125,000 you have to pay a SDLT.

If you buy a land (agricultural land, forests) for £150,000 or more, you pay the SDLT.

SDLT rates 2014/15

The table below gives the SDLT rates you will pay for residential property.

Property purchase price SDLT rate
Up to £125,000 0%
Between £125,001 and £250,000 1%
Between £250,001 and £500,000 3%
Between £500,001 and £1 million 4%

How do I pay Stamp Duty Land Tax?

Your solicitor or licensed conveyancer will handle this for you and send it to Her Majesty Revenue & Customs (HMRC) on your behalf.

SDLT payments are due within 30 days of the '”effective date'” of the transaction which is normally the date the transaction was completed.
